In life, there are no do-overs. Fortunately, this is a website.

The summer’s in full swing. It’s hot. It’s uncomfortable. And we here in New England are too used to winter to consider buying air conditioners.

The heat and the pressure of two months of non-stop book-buying, reading, drafting, recruiting, interviewing, and e-mailing with all of you has taught me a lot about how Fungible Convictions will work best. Given that, I’m ceasing all heavy lifting for the rest of the summer as Alan and I reconfigure the site. It’s for the best—I need to stop buying so many damn books! But also my company’s week-long national meeting is in a few weeks, and I’ll be taking a week-long vacation after that.

What I’ve learned in this time, specific to FC, is this:

1) Pieces get found if they’re tied into current events.

2) FC’s readers demand good design as much as they do good writing.

3) FC, as my part-time endeavor, has to narrow its focus.

Thus, Alan and I will be working over the next month and a half to create a new Fungible Convictions, one that specifically explores the relationship between literature and online design. It’s a critical issue for all writers: what will be the balance between print and Internet, and if the Internet is to become more central, how is good writing to be written, found, and read? Focusing on that task, I’ll be able to direct readers to the best writing on the best-designed sites while at the same time exploring (that is, posting) examples submitted by you.

I’ll document this change through regular posts on Fungible Convictions. And we should still be able to post the occassional review and interview, but not with the frequency we’ve tried to maintain over the last couple months.

A hearty thank you, of course, to everyone who’s been following us and writing in with your great e-mails and thoughtful comments.
